Urban Scholar Academy is dedicated to transforming the lives of urban youth and closing the achievement gap by providing academic enrichment and community service opportunities to minority students living in the Inglewood area of Los Angeles. The College and Career Readiness standards that anchor the K-12 Common Core standards require all students to learn skills through technology. In today’s classroom, students need technology for not only developing typing skills, but also to access: California Smarter Balanced Assessment & preparation activities, digital text books with imbedded video content, word processors to produce & publish writing, and online learning games, quizzes, forums, lesson plans and teacher feedback. Urban Scholar Academy assists approximately 60 students in grades 1-8 in acquiring these skills & resources through their Homework Club, Tutoring, and Saturday Academies. With a Women Helping Youth $5080.00 grant to purchase laptops with charging cart, printer, headphones, and mouse pads, Urban Scholars will help bridge the digital divide for underserved Inglewood students, who lack technology at home/school, in an effort to help them develop critical skills and have access to information that will produce academic success.
